Christians in the Catholic Diocese of Masaka on Sunday gathered at Kitovu Cathedral for a special thanksgiving Mass in honour of the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, as he marked 33 years since ascending the throne.
The Mass brought together clergy, religious leaders, Buganda Kingdom officials, government representatives and hundreds of faithful who thanked God for the Kabaka’s life, leadership and service since his coronation in 1993.
The Mass, which was initially scheduled to be led by the Bishop of Masaka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Serverus Jjumba, was instead presided over by the Diocese Pastoral Coordinator, Rev. Fr. James Ssendege, who represented the bishop.
Also in attendance were the Cathedral Administrator, Rev. Fr. Andrew Kyamufumba, members of the clergy, religious sisters, Buganda Kingdom officials and representatives from the central government.
The Buganda Kingdom was represented by the Minister for Youth, Sports and Talent Development, Robert Sserwanja, who delivered a message from the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga.
In his homily, Rev. Fr. James Ssendege emphasised the importance of preserving cultural heritage, describing culture as a gift that should unite communities rather than divide them.
“Our culture is part of our identity and should never be looked at as something that holds society back. Those who think culture is outdated simply do not understand its value,” Rev. Fr. Ssendege said.
He referenced the late Bishop Emeritus Adrian Kivumbi Ddungu, who often highlighted the role of Buganda’s monarchy in promoting unity, peace and moral values within society.
Rev. Fr. Ssendege also commended individuals who contributed to the restoration of the Buganda Kingdom after years of abolition, saying their sacrifices continue to benefit present and future generations.
“We thank all those who tirelessly worked for the restoration of the Kingdom. Their commitment ensured that Buganda’s cultural institutions continue to guide and inspire our people,” he added.
Delivering the Katikkiro’s message, Kingdom Minister Robert Sserwanja congratulated Kabaka Mutebi upon reaching 33 years of leadership.
The message praised the Kabaka for providing peaceful, wise and visionary leadership that has contributed to the preservation and strengthening of Buganda Kingdom.
“The last 33 years have been dedicated to protecting, rebuilding and strengthening Buganda. We remain grateful for His Majesty’s wisdom and commitment to his people,” the message read.
The Katikkiro also urged parents to take deliberate steps to teach children about Buganda’s customs, traditions and values to ensure the preservation of the Kingdom’s cultural heritage for future generations.
He thanked the Catholic Church for consistently praying for the Kabaka and for its continued partnership with the Kingdom in promoting moral values and community development.
Cathedral Administrator Rev. Fr. Andrew Kyamufumba said it was important for the Church to continue praying for leaders entrusted with serving their communities.
“Praying for our leaders is our Christian responsibility. We thank God for granting the Kabaka good health and pray that He continues to guide him as he serves Buganda,” Rev. Fr. Kyamufumba said.
Also speaking at the thanksgiving Mass, Pokino Jude Muleke praised Kabaka Mutebi for his contribution to the revival and growth of Buganda Kingdom, describing his reign as one characterised by stability, unity and cultural restoration.
The thanksgiving Mass was part of activities marking the 33rd Coronation Anniversary of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, with Christians offering prayers for his continued good health, wisdom and long life as he continues to lead Buganda.
